Massage and Bodywork
I am a practitioner of several styles of Asian massage and bodywork, primarily Tui Na, Shiatsu and Acupressure, with a strong influence from Craniosacral Therapy. Combining these modalities allows me to adapt the session based on your particular needs. The active techniques create freedom and comfort in the musculoskeletal system, moving stagnant energy. The still, subtle work nourishes and balances the energetic body, building vitality. Working across the spectrum from active to subtle techniques allow for a variety of responses from the body, and ultimately integration. The process of integration involves listening as the inner healing wisdom unfolds and expresses itself. What’s most important to me is to listen to your story, understand your goals, and decide together how to best combine these forms in order to help you reach that goal.
“When people are like gardens, then [bodyworkers] are like gardeners. The role of the [bodyworker] is to cultivate life” – Harriet Beinfield and Efrem Korngold, Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine
Tui Na
Tui Na is an active and invigorating style of massage from ancient China that was traditionally practiced in hospitals and acupuncture clinics. Tui Na utilizes a series of hand techniques, such as brushing, grasping, kneading, pressing, rolling, shaking, percussion and range of motion to bring energetic balance to the body, mind, and spirit. The particular style that I practice is known as Wind and Waters Tui Na, created by Brian O’Dea. It is based on the gentle and fluid rhythmic movements of Tai Chi.
Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage that literally translates as “finger pressure”. It incorporates compression, rocking, stretching, brushing and percussion along the meridians, or energetic channels. Like Tui Na, it aims to achieve a healthy and balanced flow of qi throughout the body. Shiatsu is typically done on a floor mat but table sessions are also available.
Acupressure
Acupressure is the subtle form of bodywork associated with Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is similar to acupuncture but uses gentle to firm touch instead of needles. It works with points along the meridian channels to help balance the yin and yang energies of the body.
Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a western bodywork modality that was developed through the field of osteopathy. Using a subtle and gentle touch, CST frees restrictions in the soft tissues and bones that surround the central nervous system.
Swedish/Deep Tissue
Swedish and Depp Tissue are western styles of massage utilizing oils and designed to release muscular tension in the body and increase blood flow and circulation.
Please note that the Asian styles of bodywork are traditionally done over the clothes so if that is what you would like please wear something loose fitting and comfortable. Swedish and Deep Tissue massages are also available and done with client draped and undressed.
